Energy Conservation Tip #1 | Low Flow Shower Heads

Energy Conservation Tip #1

Low Flow Shower Heads

 Greetings & Salutations Energy Hero's!

In our quest to help everybody achieve grid independence, we have put together a list of 10 tips that you can easily implement around your own home to help you achieve Net 0!

Up first, Low Flow Shower Heads!

How Can They Help?

Low flow shower heads can reduce water consumption by up to 40%! Showers especially, require high amounts of energy to heat the water, so reducing water consumption also reduces energy consumption, reducing heating costs by up to $50 per year or more! Not to mention, this also reduces carbon dioxide emissions. Combine these with an overall less use of water, and you are looking at some serious end of the year savings.

What is a ‘Low Flow Shower Head’?

A Low Flow Shower Head is generally referred to as a Shower Head with a flow rate of less than 2.5 gpm (gallons per minute). You can choose between an aerating or a laminar-flow shower head.

Aerating means combining water with air to create a mist-like spray.

Laminar-flow shower heads usually have multiple streams of water. The best low-flow shower heads also frequently include a flow restrictor which causes more or less water to flow through the lines, allowing you to control how much flow you require based on your water pressure preferences.

Where Can I Get One?

Most Home Department stores like Lowe’s or Home Depot will carry this part for between $15 - $40.

How Hard Are They To Install?

Easy!

Start by unscrewing the old shower head by hand.

Next, clean the pipe thread with a toothbrush or damp rag before wrapping it in pipe thread tape, also available at your local home department store.

Hand-tighten the new shower head into place. When you can't turn it any further, wrap a rag around it and use pliers to turn it another quarter turn.

Finally, turn on the shower and look for leaks.
